The Chaste Tree: The Tree That Made Me Fall in Love with Southern Summers
If I had to choose one tree that perfectly captures a South Carolina summer, (that’s not a palmetto tree) it would be the Chaste Tree.
Botanical Name: Vitex agnus-castus
Every year, as I drive down Highway 17 through Surfside Beach, I catch myself slowing down just to admire them. Their soft lavender blooms seem to float above the branches, creating ribbons of purple that line the road. Against the bright Carolina sky, they’re impossible to miss and somehow they never get old.
They’re one of those plants that quietly steal the show.
A Tree That Gives More Every Year
One of my favorite things about Chaste Trees is that they reward patience.
Each spring, just when you think winter has taken its toll, they wake up again. Fresh green leaves emerge, followed by long, fragrant spikes of lavender-purple flowers that bloom throughout the summer.
And every single year…
They’re bigger.
They’re fuller.
They’re more beautiful than they were the year before.
That’s one of the reasons I recommend them so often. While technically a deciduous flowering tree or large shrub, here along the South Carolina coast they return season after season with incredible vigor, rewarding you with an even more impressive display each year.
